Astral Awareness

Sketch's Profile Image Telepathy is weird, because thoughts are weird. They sort of run together and don’t always make sense. Telepathic communication is probably even stranger, because there is probably very little actual discussion- it’s more than likely an exchange of impulses and emotions, remembered as well as expressed, along with a strange mishmash of mental imagery. I’m not sure how one might communicate while astral projecting, but I assume it’d be something along those lines. It’s probably also really hard, if not impossible, to lie under those circumstances.

Sapo's Profile image I thought that this would be an awkward way of telling the story. Now however this is one of my favorite story panels. I hope you like it as well because there is more to come. -Sapo

Meditation

Sketch's Profile Image The satellite dishes probably were not necessary, but I’d wanted a way to show that his meditation was not a simple marshaling of thoughts and deep breathing- his consciousness is supposed to be flitting across great distances, whether Astral or otherwise, which makes Ezra’s contact with him more intimate as well as profound.

Sapo's Profile image This is where MegMan’s training begins. When this was first conceived we had no idea what his powers would be. Since the relaunch of MegMan we will be giving you a more complete overview of his powers. I hope you like the next few issues. -Sapo

Escape

Sketch's Profile Image The funny thing about “secret societies” is that some of the things that they are said to do take place in the broadest of daylight, or are simply inobscurable (like detonating missiles or driving That Crane Thingy into the middle of the desert), yet they still manage to avoid the public eye.

The second panel is a little too stiff, but I like the third- between the text and the image, it’s almost like something that you might see in an advertisement for the First Earth Defense Society (if there were such things).

Sapo's Profile image The world is a dangerous place. The First Earth Defense Society (FEDS),  was founded by a fringe group of UFO hunters. They have been tracking MegMan’s space craft since it appeared near Earth. It was only a matter of time before they caught up with MegMan. They did not expect MegMan’s ship to go down so easily.

The Welcome Wagon

Sketch's Profile Image I tried to keep the Zer0 Patrol suits looking like 1940s-level technology. Not that I really did any research or anything, but I figured that if the suits and equipment looked kind of clunky it’d be appropriate.

The tri-panel layout in Panel 3 was a bit of an experiment. I kind of  like it. I wish I’d done a better job with the explosion, though. I remember drawing and re-drawing it a bunch and never really being happy with it, then settling for that one. Ah well.

Sapo's Profile image Like I said before I would not have shot down the ship. The ship being shot down creates problems in the storyline. But now that it’s shot down we have to make sure that the ship gets reintroduced into the storyline down the road. For me the ship is very important and is a character itself.

New World, New Problems.

Sketch's Profile Image Fun Fact: Sometimes I’ll blatantly cheat and use a built-in thing from Photoshop or the programs  I’m using, or a photo. For whatever reason, I drew the coyote, but used a basic shape from a Photoshop library for his navigation system.

Fun Fact #2: I re-used the spaceship image from panel to panel, and would reuse it again. In fact, the artwork in Panel 3 was repurposed for the old chapter break image, just flipped over. But it’s gone now, so no harm done.

Sapo's Profile image My problem with the way the storyline is running is that MegMan gets caught with his pants down. How does a race with their technology advancement get caught out their like this. Hind sight is 20/20.  If I had it to do over again I would not have had MegMan shot down.  Going forward we will make MegMan a stronger character and give reasons for what MegMan can and will do.

Banished

Sketch's Profile Image I should have kept the scarf on him Panel 1. I’m assuming that after he was sentenced (or perhaps waiting for sentencing), he collected his possession(s), and then was thrown onto the ship. I’ll forget the scarf from panel to panel going forward as well, too; don’tcha worry.

I rather like the big guy in Panel 2- his headgear is kind of wacky, which adds character. I don’t know why they’re shaped like femurs stuck in his head, though.

Sapo's Profile image This is my favorite comic. Mostly because MegMan was man handled in panel 2. This is the guy I do not ever want to meet at the club.  He tossed MegMan in like a sack of Potatoes. I did not know what to do with MegMan everything up to this point was obvious to me. What gave me trouble is what do we do with MegMan now.

Going to Extremes

Sketch's Profile ImageI don’t know why he felt the need to cover his face for a radio transmission (later continuity discussions turned up that MegMan is telepathic on top of everything else), but it seemed to fit. The “Pearl Harbor” sign was a bit much, but I didn’t know how else to simply depict it.

Looking back, it’s also interesting to me that a relatively peaceful race of creatures would produce one so obviously equipped for busting heads, like the large fellow to the right of Panel 4, with his Dual Sidearms (literally!) action there.

Sapo's Profile image This is the comic where MegMan decides to become a hero. The greatest part about this comic it the decision made by Sketch to have MegMan cover his face it was the ultimate homage to super heroism.  In one moment this scarf became Clark Kent’s glasses. This comic in my minds eye was supposed to last a few comics long.  Sketch shortened it to one comic mostly because I did not tell him not to. Frankly it was the best thing that was done in the MegMan series.

When the Music Stops.

Sketch's Profile Image Why WWI (or any other of the many, many conflicts in human history for that matter) wasn’t enough to rouse him to action, I’ll never know. I’m also not sure why I put myself through the trouble of drawing instruments- I guess I hadn’t discovered stock photography at that point. Notice that MegMan has tuned at least two more recording devices in to the sounds of Earth as well- the little  brown one and another offstage in Panel 3.

Panel 4 still makes me smile all these years after drawing it the first time.

Sapo's Profile image I chose World War II, because unlike all other wars the nuclear weapon was created during this war. This is also the war where many musicians went to war.  Technology is the great evil according to the Adrasteans.

Adrasteans Fun fact:  They actually are refugees from another planet. Their planet was destroyed because of their technological ambitions.

Oh and Happy April Fools day… almost!

Grave Discoveries

Sketch's Profile Image In the early concept art of MegMan by another artist, his headpiece was shaped like the letter “M.” I tried to keep that, and eventually stylized it into the ridiculous pair of antlers that adorn our Alien DJ.

I remember doing a long and tedious search for images of Nikola Tesla for panel 3 (he was mentioned by name in the first draft of the script), then abandoning it. I should have just put a photo of him in a speech bubble, like the Earth images, but I guess I never thought of it, and Panel 3 is kind of lame as a result.

However, I do love the idea of the X-ray gun.

Sapo's Profile image At this point we had an understanding on how MegMan would work emotionally, and we knew he would have to fall in love with aspects of the human race. We just did not yet figure out how MegMan would become a DJ. We needed MegMan to have a musician edge. At one point Nikola Tesla was suggested as a major story arc, I found that I had no way to write him into the story with out sounding stupid. So we made Nikola Tesla’s work a timeline point in the Earth’s Technological  advancement.

Ezra’s Rebuttal

Sketch's Profile ImageFun Fact: Several of the Ancients’ headpieces are shaped like letters of the English Alphabet. Some of them are just random squiggles that I made up because I got tired while drawing the crowd.

They’re wearing togas because they’re enlightened, not because of any sense of modesty. Notice the (apparently) female (she’s got eyelashes) Ancient on the left is as shapeless as the others, and we’ve already seen that they don’t have any external junk.

Sapo's Profile image When we first introduced Ezra, we were not sure what his (I use his very losely at this point in time the Adrastean are relativly sexless.) role would be. In my rewriting of MegMan, Ezra will have a larger role. Right now we consider Ezra a legend in the MegMan timeline.
